Is Masturbation a Sin and a Seriously Disordered Act?

Masturbation is the self stimulus of the genitals for pleasure and self comfort. It's an act of self encouragement to produce sexual arousal, pleasure and orgasm. Masturbation in historical perspective was considered by many as more dangerous than smoking and therefore evil. But the truth is that it was highly prevalent during the early periods and among today's youth approximately 94% of the male population masturbates.

In Pope Paul VI's words it was a "seriously disordered act". In many societies, masturbation is still a taboo and much stigma attached to it. This notion came about due to the thought that masturbation is driven by lust and fantasy. Kids tease each other that it will make you go blind and make your palms hairy. Recently a research showed men who ejaculate between the ages of 20 and 50 are less likely to develop prostate cancer. Studies show that ejaculating frequently cut the risk of prostate cancer by preventing the buildup of harmful chemicals. Ejaculation will flush out these carcinogens and will therefore not damage the cells.

Sure masturbation is compelling and is sex focused on pleasure, nothing else. But as long as it is a part of your life and not whole of your life, you're fine. As I view it, masturbation is mostly about enjoyment and nothing else. Masturbation is one sexual pleasure that you give yourself without harm.

Masturbation is sex with someone you love dearly. Consider it as having sex with one's self and is definitely not wrong in the eyes of God as some would like you to believe. Masturbation is not a Sin. Health Professionals will tell you that masturbation is a natural and healthy part of male and female self control. It is a normal and healthy practice, like day dreaming or sleeping and eating. Therefore tell your children that masturbation is natural for children and adults, and that even their friends probably masturbate. It is entirely normal plus a good way of getting to know your body - a form of self exploration.

However, a side effect attached with masturbation is that you can get hooked. Masturbation is sometimes used as a substitute for true intimacy normally with a partner. Compulsive masturbation could be a symptom of a deeper disorder such as lack of intimacy or feeling of hidden shame for instance.

The performing of the masturbation is as ancient as the history of mankind.

Editor's Notation Here: Autofellatio is also as ancient as masturbation. Proof exists in drawings and carvings from the most technically advanced ancient civilizations. These would be Meso-American, Egyptian, and the Sumerians. Yogafellatio is a book about this ancient practice.
